Welcome

Thinking about counselling?

Firstly, thank you for stopping by. Perhaps you are looking for counselling, or just curious about what this involves.

Let me start by saying that I understand this can be a daunting step for some, to speak to someone for the first time. But, it can also be the first step to making positive change in life, relationships and your wellbeing.

There are a variety of approaches to the way practitioners work with their clients. I have been trained in a therapeutic approach called Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy. This method of therapy is based on Psychoanalysis which focuses on psychological problems rooted in the unconscious mind. Experiences from a person’s past can influence thoughts, emotions and behaviour in later life. Bringing these to the front of your mind allows any negative feelings to be dealt with.

Psychodynamic Counselling is derived from psychoanalysis, but focuses on immediate problems to try to provide a quicker solution. It stresses the importance of the unconscious and past experience in shaping current behaviour. A therapist will aim to build an accepting and trusting relationship, encouraging you to talk about your childhood relationships with your parents and other significant people. It also uses similar techniques to psychotherapy, including free association, interpretation and especially transference, where feelings you experienced in previous significant relationships are projected onto the therapist.

An introduction.....

I offer a warm,  empathic, confidential and non-judgemental space to facilitate an environment which enables us to think about the challenges you may be facing together.

I have worked in the mental health sector for many years where I have supported people from all backgrounds and presentations.  I currently work for an NHS Digital Team offering remote counselling sessions.

After completing a Certificate of Higher Education in Counselling from The University of Hertfordshire I went on to obtain my MSc in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy from Birkbeck, University of London and use this modality in my work.

I have also completed the IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapies) Person Centred Experiential Counselling for Depression training.

I commit to continue developing my understanding of the way I work through continual professional development.

I feel passionate about and believe strongly in the work I do.

I currently offer long term or short term, face to face and online counselling in my private practice at my setting in Hitchin.

Online Counselling

Online counselling is a popular option for many reasons; whether it be because of distance,  time saved in commuting or busy schedule, confidence, anxiety in leaving the house, disability or access difficulties, etc.

This option will be discussed at initial consultation to ensure you have a private space free from interruptions for sessions to take place in.
